How to Set Up IPTV on an LG Smart TV (2026 Guide)

Step-by-step guide to installing and watching IPTV on your LG Smart TV in Canada or the USA. Works with webOS models from 2016 onwards — no extra hardware needed.

Short answer

Install IPTV Smarters Pro from the LG Content Store, choose Login with Xtream Codes API, and enter your username, password and portal URL. Setup takes about ten minutes on any webOS TV from 2016 onwards. LG TVs usually need a different portal URL than other devices — using the wrong one looks exactly like a wrong password.

LG Smart TVs running webOS are one of the easiest ways to watch IPTV — big screen, no Fire Stick, no Android box, nothing extra to buy. Here's how to get it running in about 10 minutes.

What You Need Before You Start

  • An LG Smart TV running webOS 3.0 or newer (any model from 2016 onwards)
  • A stable internet connection — 15 Mbps minimum for HD, 25 Mbps for 4K
  • An IPTV subscription with a portal URL, username and password

If you don't have a subscription yet, you can start a free 24-hour trial and follow this guide with real login details.

Step 1: Install IPTV Smarters Pro

  1. Press the Home button on your LG remote
  2. Open the LG Content Store
  3. Search for IPTV Smarters Pro
  4. Select Install, then Launch

If IPTV Smarters Pro isn't available in your region's store, Set IPTV and Smart IPTV are solid alternatives and the steps below work almost identically.

Step 2: Log In With Your Details

When the app opens, choose Login with Xtream Codes API — not the M3U option. It gives you a proper channel guide instead of a plain list.

Enter:

  • Any name you like (this is just a label — "Living Room" works)
  • Username — from your welcome email
  • Password — from your welcome email
  • Portal URL — from your welcome email

Then select Add User.

⚠️ The One Thing LG Owners Get Wrong

LG and Samsung TVs often use a different portal URL than every other device.

If your provider gave you two URLs, the LG one is the second address — the one labelled for Samsung & LG or for IPTV Smarters. Using the main URL on an LG TV is the single most common reason setup fails, and it usually shows up as a login error or an empty channel list.

If your login is rejected, check that URL before assuming your subscription is broken. YourIPTV customers get both addresses clearly labelled in their welcome email, so you always know which one belongs on the TV.

Step 3: Let the Channels Load

The first load pulls in the full channel list and programme guide. On a large package this takes two to five minutes — the app can look frozen while it works. Don't force-close it.

Once it finishes you'll see your categories: Live TV, Movies, Series, and the EPG.

Fixing the Common Problems

| Problem | Cause | Fix | |---|---|---| | Login fails | Wrong portal URL for LG | Use the Samsung/LG URL, not the main one | | Channels won't load | First-time EPG sync | Wait 5 minutes, don't close the app | | Buffering on 4K only | Connection under 25 Mbps | Use Ethernet, or switch to the HD stream | | App missing from store | Older webOS version | Use Set IPTV or Smart IPTV instead | | Black screen on one channel | Single dead stream | Try another channel — if all fail, it's the connection |

Persistent buffering across every channel is usually your network, not the service. Our guide on how to fix IPTV buffering walks through the fixes in order.

Wi-Fi vs Ethernet on LG

LG's built-in Wi-Fi is adequate but not great, especially on models more than a few years old. If your TV sits near the router, a cheap Ethernet cable eliminates most buffering complaints outright — it's the highest-impact change you can make, and it costs a few dollars.

Is It Worth It on an LG TV?

Yes — LG webOS is genuinely one of the better IPTV platforms. The remote is responsive, the apps are stable, and because everything runs on the TV itself there's no extra box, no extra remote, and no HDMI switching.

For most Canadian and American households replacing a cable package, an LG TV plus a $6.25/month IPTV subscription covers everything a $100+ cable bill did.

Frequently asked questions

Which LG TVs support IPTV?+

Any LG running webOS 3.0 or later, which covers models from 2016 onwards. Older sets need a Fire Stick or Android box on HDMI.

Why is my LG TV rejecting the login?+

Most often the portal URL rather than the password. LG and Samsung televisions frequently use a different portal address than phones and Fire Sticks.

Is IPTV Smarters free on LG?+

Yes, IPTV Smarters Pro is free from the LG Content Store. Set IPTV and Smart IPTV are alternatives, though some charge a small one-off activation fee.

Do I need extra hardware for an LG Smart TV?+

No. A webOS television from 2016 onwards runs IPTV natively with no extra box.

Why is the channel list empty after logging in?+

The first sync downloads the full channel list and programme guide, which takes two to five minutes on a large package. The app can look frozen - do not close it.

Should I use Wi-Fi or Ethernet on an LG TV?+

Ethernet if the television is near the router. LG's built-in Wi-Fi is adequate but a cable eliminates most buffering complaints for a few dollars.
